Bake sale brings £300 book boost for Anthony Curton school

March 7, 2023

A group of enterprising pupils have helped their school raise hundreds of pounds to buy new books.

Year 6 pupils at Anthony Curton Primary School in Walpole St Peter, near Wisbech, felt their library needed some fresh titles so decided to do something about it.

They came up with the idea of holding a bake sale and took their proposal to the school’s headteacher, Dawn Liddle, who helped them put their plan into action.

Miss Liddle said: “It’s always great to see the pupils being enterprising and coming up with ways to help the school. Their idea to hold a bake sale was perfect and I was only too happy to back it. We sent out a text to families and the response was amazing – so many cakes came flooding in.”

The school was inundated with cakes, from parents and pupils, all enthusiastic about helping to raise funds for new books.

On the day, organisers, Emily Swinburn, Finlay McMullen and Lewis Cawthorne from Year 6, set up the bake sale with the customers queuing for a tasty treat at breaktime.

The bake table was covered with everything from brownies and fairy cakes to cookies and muffins.

At the end of the day the children had raised an incredible £300 to buy the books and an order was placed almost immediately.

“We were inundated with cakes,” said Miss Liddle. “We all want to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated and sent in money for the children to spend – what an incredible effort. A special mention goes to Year 6 pupil Lauren Hurn, our resident baker of all things delicious, who got very busy in the kitchen indeed.”

The children’s efforts were quickly rewarded, as within days two large boxes of books were delivered, including titles such as The Demon Dentist, The Worst Witch alongside series of books such as Pokemon and Ultimate Football Heroes.

Miss Liddle added: “An extra thanks goes to Finlay’s McMullen’s dad, who works in Booklife in King’s Lynn which we were able to make the order through and get the books so speedily. It has been great for the children to see what their teamwork can achieve.”
