School children honour those who died in line of duty

November 29, 2022

A group of Suffolk school children came together over a week long period to pay their respect to those who fought in World War I.

The pupils, from St Christopher’s Church of England Primary School in Red Lodge, near Bury St Edmunds, took part in a range of activities in the week leading up to Remembrance Day.

The whole school spent time learning about World War I, with the older year groups also spending time learning about individuals who gave their lives for their country.

In addition to this, every pupil at the school painted a bottle bottom which transformed into a display by the school’s gardening group, ‘Young Buds’.

To mark Remembrance Day itself, alongside Headteacher, Mrs Caroline James, the year six house captains conducted a service in which parents and friends of the school were invited to attend.

As 11am approached, those in attendance listened to the Last Post before observing the national two-minute silence.

Mrs Caroline James, Headteacher of St Christopher’s Church or England Primary School, said:

“Remembrance Day is such an important time of the year and it is something we are very passionate about instilling in our pupils.

“This year marks the first time since the beginning of the pandemic that we have been able to come together as one to mark this moment and take time to honour all of those who bravely fought for this country.

“It was incredibly moving to see all the children getting involved and to have parents and friends able to join us for the ceremony was really quite special.”

Once the school’s poppy field was complete, classes got the chance to and visit this display throughout the day and have some time to pay their respects.

Masie Goody, a year six pupil at the school, said:

“After learning all about World War I, it was really great to be able to honour those who died in the line of duty by taking part in my school’s display.

“Making our poppy display was really fun and I am really proud of what we were able to make.”
