School pupils scoop prizes at Christmas tree festival

Students across all years got creative this Christmas when they made decorations as part of a Christmas tree festival at the nearby St Andrews Church.
The Anthony Curton Friend’s Association (ACFA) donated the £5 entry fee for each class to enter a tree into the church’s festival and the children went to town on dressing them for the occasion.
Teaching Assistant and After School Club Play Leader, Yvonne Gant, who helped with the school’s involvement, said: “All of the children were very excited to be able to enter a decorated tree into the festival. They worked really hard, with each class making their own decorations and some tying the theme into their learning. For example, class 4 made 3D maths shapes using Greek flag paper as this was part of their project for history and geography. Others used music or art themes.
“In total, we entered eight trees and there were 14 entered altogether so we were delighted that our children placed well in the competition.”
The Christmas trees, some of which were entered by local businesses, were judged and the school’s Year 3 took first prize, Year 1 came second, and the Reception children won third place.
Mrs Gant said: “Each class was awarded a tub of sweets from the church for their amazing effort and all of the trees together looked beautiful. It was a great way to celebrate Christmas with the local community.
“A big thanks to the AFCA for helping with the costs and for also very kindly purchasing a tree for each class and after school club.”
