Milton CofE Primary School pupils meet Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

June 30, 2022

Schoolchildren had a day to remember when they were invited to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to a local children’s hospice.

The royal couple visited East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) and 20 lucky children were chosen to welcome them on the day.

The pupils from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 at Milton CofE Primary School, part of the Diocese of Ely Muti-Academy Trust, had no idea that they would be meeting the royals and excitement was high when they were let in on the secret.

Teacher and school council leader Bex Houghton said: “EACH contacted our school office and asked if we had 20 children that would be available.

“We decided to take our school councillors as we normally do a trip to the Houses of Parliament but haven’t been able to go this year.

“When we arrived, the organisers told the children that the Duke and Duchess would be visiting the hospice. The children were all given flags to wave on their arrival and were told that the royals might stop to speak to them.”

The children lined up outside the front of the hospice with teachers Bex Houghton, Gemma Tilley and Rebecca Dodman and excitedly waved their flags and cheered as the royals arrived.

The Duke and Duchess spent time chatting to the pupils, asking about school and what sports they enjoy. The Duke even asked some of the children for some football advice.

Year 6 pupil Sebastian Searle gave a gift to the Duchess which was a ceramic ornament made by his mum.

Once the royals entered the building the children were given an ice-lollies and a certificate by the EACH staff.

Mrs Houghton added: “The children came away so excited and they couldn’t believe that not only did they get to see them, but they also spoke to them too.

“This was an amazing opportunity for the pupils, and they all spoke with such confidence and excitement. The staff at the hospice commented on how sensible and polite the children were.”

Year 6 pupil Phoebe Owen said: “It was amazing to meet the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. They were both unbelievably nice.”

Year 6’s Elsa Downie added: “We got to speak to the Duke and Duchess which was really exciting.”

Tina Burdett, EACH Community Fundraising Manager, said: “We were delighted to welcome the children and so pleased they could be part of our very special Royal visit.

“They represented their school impeccably and it was lovely to see how excited they were to meet The Duke and Duchess.

“They were a big part of our day and hopefully it’s something they will remember with real fondness for many years to come.”
