Milton Primary School pupils look ahead to future careers

June 20, 2023

Students at a Cambridgeshire primary school took part in an exciting careers fair held at their school.

Year 5 and 6 pupils at Milton Church of England Primary School met dozens of employees from local businesses and organisations who came in to talk about their jobs.

The visitors explained what their professions involve, the qualifications they needed and how their career had progressed.

A total of 15 stalls were available for the pupils to visit and included staff from Thalia Waste Management, Denny Abbey Farmland Museum, Munro Building Services, AG First Aid Training, Cambridge United Community Trust and Leaders Estate Agents.

The pupils came prepared with lots of good questions and  school staff said they were inspired by the event which sparked lots of ideas about future job prospects.

Year 6 teacher and event organiser Bex Houghton said: "It was the first time that we have held a careers fair and we will definitely be organising one again in the future. It was lovely for the children to experience talking to different adults about their careers and finding out more about the education routes that they may need to go down for different jobs.

“The children were really engaged in every stall and had their eyes opened to various opportunities that they may have in the future. The practical activities were fab, and the pupils also came prepared with questions that they wanted to ask to find out more."

Children were able to get hands on at the event, with practical activities such as a quiz on artefacts found by an archaeologist, looking at items through a microscope brought in by a cell biologist, applying bandages with AG First Aid and trying on Personal Protective Equipment with Thalia Waste Management.

The event was so successful that the school will now implement it every two years for the Year 5 and 6 pupils, with the hope that one day the same pupils will be returning to tell the next generation about their own amazing careers.
