School pupils delighted by visit from Bruno the guide dog

November 7, 2022

Pupils at a Walpole St Peter primary school had a very special visitor recently.

As part of their project on senses, children in Year 1 at Anthony Curton Primary School were visited by Bruno the guide dog.

Bruno came along to the school with his owner Nicky, who is visually impaired, to help the students learn more about the role of a guide dog.

The visit came as Year 1 had lessons about their own senses as part of a science project - and what happens when sight, or hearing are lost.

Nicky was able to tell the children all about Bruno’s role in supporting her.

Class 1 teacher Miss Collison said, “Meeting Nicky and Bruno was such a great experience for our pupils. It really helped them understand what life is like as a visually impaired person and to find out more about the very important job of a guide dog. They understood that although Bruno is very cute, he’s got a very important job and Nicky depends on him.”

The children learned how Bruno keeps Nicky safe by using his own senses.

They were full of questions about his day-to-day life, including asking Nicky what he eats for breakfast and how long he sleeps for.

Bruno’s owner also explained to the children that as he is getting older, he will have to retire as a guide dog and that she will get a new one but reassured them she would very much like to keep him as a pet, if possible, when that happens.

The guide dog visit was arranged for the school, which is part of the Diocese of Ely Multi-Academy Trust, via Miss Collison through guidedogs.org.uk
