School raises thousands with epic 333 mile run around the playground

April 20, 2023

An entire Cambridgeshire primary school limbered up for a huge fun run at the end of term.

Staff, pupils and parents at Swaffham Prior Primary School took part in an epic six and a half hour sponsored run around the school grounds.

The run was led by local Ultra Marathon runner Simon Burnett, who ran laps around Swaffham Prior, from 8.45am-3.15pm.

All children joined Simon for at least two laps and, together with staff and parents who also took part, the team clocked up an impressive 333 miles of running.

The aim of the mammoth event was to raise money for the school to buy a set of Chromebooks for pupils to use in lessons.

With donations still rolling in, the school is delighted to have raised nearly £3,500.

Simon Burnett, who ran 34 miles over the six and a half hours non-stop, said: “It was amazing – truly awesome seeing the kids enjoy themselves so much.”

Headteacher Helen Bartley said: “What a fantastic day. All our children, staff and parents showed enthusiasm, grit and determination and had such a great time.

“A massive thank you goes to Simon Burnett and Miss Bellwood for putting together an amazing event – and to all staff, children, parents and grandparents who participated, promoted and supported.

“It really was a joyous day despite the rainy weather in the morning – as a headteacher, I have never been prouder.”

Parents said the event was inspiring and they were all delighted to see the school come together so well.

Event organiser Katie Bellwood said: “Thank you to everyone who took part.

“It was a brilliant day that hopefully the children will remember for a long time.”

Year 4 Pupil Will said: “I ran five miles and it was the best day ever!”

Mrs Bartley added: “Despite the rain, we did it – and did it with aplomb.

“The children pushed themselves further than they ever realised they could.

“Cars, buses, tractors and lorries honked as they drove past and money rolled in throughout the day. What a great way to end the spring term!”
